IMOVIO, a producer of affordable wireless multimedia devices, introduces a very attractive solution for mobile communication that allows you to save up to £500 while chatting, emailing and browsing. The press release caught our attention and we had all the details to learn all about the new device.

“Many consumers can’t afford the latest smartphone or mini-PC gadget, while others simply can’t use or just don’t like the existing form factors. This means that large groups of people still don’t fully utilize mobile data,” said Dr Jack Torobin, CEO of IMOVIO. “These users, mainly women and teens, still want to have the ability to send emails, browse the web and update their on-line profiles whilst they are out and about.”

It is called the iKIT and is pocket-sized micro laptop computer measuring only 95 x 65 x 15.5 mm, sporting a 2.8-inch QVGA widescreen display of 262Kcolors, on which you can browse the Internet, chat online with friends using the full QWERTY/AZERTY keyboard for typing and the built-in web camera for video conferences, initiate voice calls, play music and videos, and read the latest emails. All these can be done at high speeds via the Wi-Fi and HSDPA wireless connectivity technologies.

iKIT is smaller than mini laptop computers so you call it a micro laptop computer, designed to have the same portability level as mobile phones, in a very small form factor, but with the functionalities provides by netbooks.
You can store in it up to 8GB of files on an affordable SD memory card.

It is available at a price of around £99 or €130, while the £699 total cost of ownership of the Apple iPhone includes an 18-month contract at £30 per month, plus £159 handset purchase. Another example is the Dell mini notebook, Inspiron Mini, from Vodafone, for which you have to pay a 24-month contract at £25 per month to reach a total cost of ownership of £600.

“We designed the iKIT to be an alternative to a smartphone or mini-PC,” said Nigel Newby-House, Head of Design at IMOVIO. “It’s a beautifully designed mobile device that provides all the multi-media and messaging capabilities a mobile consumer needs. But at a much better price.”

The price is low because the iKIT micro laptop computer features the Linux 2.4.19 operating system, Opera Mini 4.1 browser, and a Marvell PXA270 312MHz processor. In addition it has Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, 128 MB ROM, 64MB SDRAM, miniUSB connector, built-in speaker, up to 2,000 contact entries, Calendar with up to 1,000 events, Countdown Timer, Stop Watch, alarm clock, world clock, notepad, media folder, and calculator.
It also provides up to 250 hours of standby and 4 hours for gaming.
