Quartet Of Satellites Introduced by Toshiba

Toshiba America Information Systems Inc. (TAIS) is structured in four business units: Digital Products Division, Imaging Systems Division, Storage Device Division, and Telecommunication Systems Division. These 4 units deal with mobile production, industry portable computers, imaging products for security markets, telephony equipment. The company is ensuring the sales, marketing and services of its range of products in USA and Latin America. TAIS is a subsidiary of Toshiba Corporation, which is a world leader and promoter in high technology products. The new highlights of its later releases is the quartet of Satellites.

The quartet of satellites introduced by Toshiba are under the L Series Line comprising 14” Satellite L510/L515, the 15.6" and 16" Satellite L500/L505, and the high end 17.3" Satellite L550/L555, and depending on configuration they will be powered by Athlon or Turion or Intel’s Pentium or Core 2 Duo processors. The Satellite L Series Laptops have been designated to serve the budget-smart consumers and ‘back-to-school’ shoppers, striking an ideal balance of style, performance and cost.  The line of these new laptops displays more screen size options, new features and introduced the Fusion Finish to confer the line a great new appearance.

quartet-of-satellitesThe Satellite L Series has 4 model classes and each one is equipped with the latest processors and stand out features like HD TruBrite widescreen displays, USB Sleep and Charge and hard drives from 250GB to 500 GB. There are present the built-in-high-speed wireless connection, expansion ports and the possibility to choose either Intel or AMD processor.

The new features that make Satellite L Series look different include new definition displays through the HD TruBrite widescreen having a 16:9 aspect ratios and 720p resolution, suitable for digital entertainment, powering among spreadsheets, or dealing with home finances. The other feature called Fusion Finish comprises a Breeze pattern integrated in a Graphite color, pattern that is followed by a color-coordinated interior that completes the aspect.

Toshiba PC Health Monitor is another feature created as a system utility that checks the critical components for problematic situations, such as battery performance, heat and hard drive movement, enabling the users to identify the potential problem just seconds before it is born and preventing the data loss as well. Another utility is given by Power-Saving Eco that allows users to display and adjust the power consumption and settings in a real-time format. It has also a 10 key numeric keypad available on 15.6” and larger types.

If we consider the fact that all new Toshiba laptops are RoHS-compatible, reducing in an effective way the environmental impact, then it would not be a surprise to confirm that Satellite L Series is also friendly to the environment. All Toshiba computers use free recycling compared to other electronic products that pay a small fee for recycling.

Toshiba FeRam

If I think well, Toshiba FeRam could be a interesting marketing name for a laptop. Unfortunately, we're supposed to be serious here, so we'll talk about the Ferroelectric RAM standard they've been working on for a few years now. Why talk about this in 2009, if it's an older technology? Well, a recent breakthrough makes Toshiba's FeRam a very interesting topic, as we're going to see right away...

Toshiba FeRam Semiconductor

I don't know about you, but FeRam sounds like something new to me, so here's some of the official mumbo-jumbo - "FeRAM combines the relatively fast operating characteristics of DRAM with flash memory's ability to retain data while powered off, attributes that continue to attract the attention of the semiconductor industry. No commercial devices are available, but many companies explore the technology rather rigorously."
<-300x250 Medium Rectangle - center->
Now, that we know all that, let's add that Toshiba claims the latest FeRam chips achieves 16MB storage capacity and an impressive read/write speed of 1.6GB per second. Back in 2006, Toshiba had a 4MB chip, able to reach a 200MBps data transfer speed, so we're talking about a serious progress here.

Despite the fact Toshiba will reveal more about the FeRam chip at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco, the company has no plans to begin mass producing it just yet, simply because price remains one of the biggest obstacles, at least for now.

In the future, the Toshiba FeRam could be a great alternative for manufacturers in need of on-chip cache memory in their semiconductors, taking all a few steps forward, since the FeRam is also capable of holding its contents when powered off. Just think... the possibilities are endless!
