If there's one thing Sony's Vaio laptops are known for, it sure ain't being friendly on the pocket book, but this new Vaio C15, just released in Taiwan, looks to be a fierce competitor in the mid-range.
Going for $1,200, the laptop packs a 1200 x 800 13.3-inch screen, Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66GHz processor, NVIDIA GeForce 7400 graphics, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB HDD, Bluetooth and even a DVD burner.
At 5 pounds heavy, the Sony Vaio C15 it's not exactly an ultraportable, but fancy inclusions like an ExpressCard slot and Memory Stick reader excuse a bit of that bulk.
The 4 hour batter life rating ain't bad neither, especially with that dedicated graphics card hogging up the juice.
All in all, it seems like Sony might have quite the winner with this model -- though there's no word yet if any of that "winning" is planned to take place over here in the USA.

Sony has addressed our only major beef with its TX series by ditching the sluggish Cingular EDGE modem in favor of Sprint's EV-DO network, offering true mobile broadband speeds for road warriors. The result is a first-class ultraportable that not only quickly downloads everything you need, but also lasts more than eight hours on a charge and boasts a built-in DVD drive—perfect for in-flight double features.
Just like earlier TX models, the Sony VAIO VGN-TXN15P expertly balances portability and usability. Thanks to its carbon fiber chassis, this system weighs only 2.8 pounds. The lid is razor-thin but provides ample protection for the 11-inch widescreen display (1366 x 768 pixels). The screen is certainly on the small side, but zooming up to 150 percent in Word and pressing “Ctrl +” in Firefox make this a non-issue.
Sony's XBrite technology means you can expect a very bright and vivid picture, especially when watching movies and showing off photos.

Like the virtually identical TX27GP, the Sony VAIO VGN-TX37GP is significantly smaller than an A4 sheet of paper. Its petite 1.25kg chassis is built around an 11.1-inch display, which makes it perfectly practical for taking on the move, yet almost intolerable as an everyday office machine.
The Sony VAIO VGN-TX37GP's predecessor was built around an aging single-core Pentium M processor, so we were glad to see this laptop benefit from more modern components. Sony has opted not to use a dual-core CPU, but you get an ultra-low voltage (ULV) Intel U1400 processor clocked at a very modest 1.2GHz and 1GB of RAM. It's not exactly geared for high-speed number crunching, but gives it the potential for extremely long battery life.
If you're looking for a laptop that's genuinely designed for life on the move, is attractive, and you have about $2,289.73 burning a hole in your pocket, the Sony VAIO VGN-TX37GP could be the one.
