The world’s highest capacity Solid State Drive was announced yesterday by Samsung Electronics, as the 256GB SSD model, which is also the world’s fastest 2.5-inch multi-level cell based SSD drive type with S-ATA II interface.
And to complete the description, Samsung’s 256GB SSD is even the world’s thinnest drive with such a capacity for use in portable computers.
Its read speed is of 200MB per second while the writing speed reaches 160MB/s, highest rates for a 9.5 mm thick Solid State Drive measuring 100.3 x 69.85 mm.
"With development of the 256GB SSD, the notebook PC is on the brink of a second stage of evolution. This change is comparable to the evolution from the Sony Walkman to NAND memory-based MP3 players, representing an initial step in the shift to thinner, smaller SSD-based notebooks with significantly improved performance and more than ample storage," declared Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.
Samsung MLC 256GB SSD model features 1 billion hours Mean Time Between Failures and 0.9 watts power consumption.
To offer a high level of data protection, Samsung MLC 256GB SSD comes with a sophisticated data encryption process that forbids unauthorized access even when the SSD is out of the computer.
The highest capacity SSD drive’s mass production is scheduled for this year’s end and until then, samples will be available in September.

According to Samsung’s press release, the company plans to release sometime during 2009 a revolutionary notebook model with AMOLED display.
It will measure 12.1 inches and the display will feature 1280 x 768 pixel resolution.
The prototype was meant for exposing at SID 2008 but Samsung didn’t publish enough information so we could get a general idea about this notebook’s capabilities.
AMOLED comes from active-matrix organic light-emitting diode which uses a TFT backplane for switching between individual pixel On and Off, creating higher resolution and enabling it on the largest screen.

Sung-kyu Nam is a designer who likes to create products that inspire magic, showing that even the strangest design ideas could become reality, and one interesting project is the DesCom, coming from “desk” and “computer”.

This is exactly what the name suggests: a desk with integrated computer which matches home office environments, and is possible to be build in the future as it is not based on complicated technologies or something that does not exist at the moment.
Its designer intended to come out with a computer easy to install in the living room and to be connected to a home theater, while targeting the business-to-business market sector of Samsung.
The design is simple, stylish and I can imagine when taking the notebook out from the desk, a sliding glass-like plate closes the gap automatically.

Samsung has built the first 64GB Solid State Drives of 1.8 inches, featuring a fast Serial ATA II/native SATA interface.

The SATA II has a sequential write speed of 100MBps and a sequential read speed of 120MBps and intends to expand its marketing sector target from notebooks to high-performance storage applications.
According to the director Jim Elliott, “The 64GB SATA II SSD is based on Samsung’s cutting-edge NAND technology with dramatically improved performance specs that are taking system performance to a whole new level of efficiency.”
The SATA II Solid State Drive is combining a 50 nm-class single-level-cell (SLC) 8 GB flash chip with Samsung’s proprietary high-speed SATA controller and supporting software.
SATA II SSD has an interface speed of 3.0 Gbps, meaning twice as fast as SATA I, while it needs only half as much power as the 1.9 watts consumed by hard drives now used in notebooks, and just 1/10 from the power consumed by enterprise-class 15,000rpm hard drives in servers.
