Sager Notebooks

When it comes to Sager notebooks, i really do not believe there is that much to discuss about. Even if Sager models are not that numerous, it is safe to say that the ones launched on the market are actually high quality laptops. One example of a good unit is the Sager NP5791, a laptop which comes with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 and 2 of RAM. This may not be most powerful combination between RAM and processor but back in 2007, you could definitely get your job done with the specs.

The graphics card is the nVidia GeForce 8700M GT with 512 MB of DDR3 video memory. The total storage capacity of the hard drive is 80 GB. Back in 2007 when the review was written, the price of the configured unit was $2000 but since the prices on laptops have dropped considerably, you could get this unit quite cheap at the present time. This Sager notebook is available in 2 different screen resolutions, the WSXGA+ (which is available in a resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels) and a glossy WUXGA display (which is available in a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels). The levels of brightness and contrast are great and the colors are sharp and beautiful and the image is clear and very pleasant to our sight. The horizontal viewing angles are enough for you to watch a movie together with a couple of friends.

The speakers have quite an unusual location as they were placed near the display hinges. They do not offer the most spectacular sound you could ever find on a 17 inch desktop replacement notebook but they are nothing to complain about either. External speakers are recommended especially since this laptop is not going to travel too far away from your desk too often. Aside from the regular keys, this is one for those Sager notebooks that pleases us through the presence of a dedicated numerical pad. The keyboard does feel nice as there is not flex registered when you type. The keys offer positive feedback and they feel very pleasant to the touch. The touchpad is covered with a texture that also feel pleasant on our fingertips and the left and right touchpad button produce a pleasant click when you press them, without any annoying noise that could bother us.

As for the selection of ports and features, this notebook manages to provide quite an impressive variety of options. First of all, we have 4 USB ports, then there is an Express Card slot, a mini FireWire port, a modem jack, an Ethernet port, a coaxial connections (for TV Tuner), a Kensington lock slot, a memory card reader, an S-Video out, a SPDIF port, a serial port, a DVI-D port and the regular headphones out an microphone in jacks. With 17 inches in diagonal, you could never expect such a big notebook to perform amazingly when it comes to battery life. The laptop does manage to stay on for 2 hours and 40 minutes with the display brightness set to medium level and while surfing the internet and working on documents.

Sager Laptops

When it comes to Sager laptops, there are not many models to choose from that would actually give us something to write a review about. It turns out that this manufacturer is producing some really cool laptops that can be as expensive as $3000.

One nice Sager laptop is the NP9260 which makes an excellent desktop replacement. Too bad that the configuration in this review costs $3634. It is powered by a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 processor which is combined with 2 GB of RAM. Compared to the other specification of this laptop, I think that Sager could have slipped in at least 4 GB of RAM. There is a total of 160 GB of free disk space but the best part of this laptop is the graphics card. This unit comes with 1 nVidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX graphic cards that have 512 MB of video memory each. This 11.55 pound laptop has a 17 inch display which means the unit is pretty heavy and big to be carried around all the time. So portability is not one of this laptop’s strong points. When it comes to the built in quality of this laptop you will definitely have nothing to complain about. Thick plastic has been used and all the materials are of high quality. There is no noticeable flex in the key areas and that is always a hint that we are dealing with a solid laptop. The silver lid has the Sager logo right in the middle area. The 17 inch display is available in 2 different resolutions – one is 1660 x 1050 pixels and the other one is 1920 x 1200 pixels. Both of these resolutions are great if you want to play games because they have good contrast and due to the glossy display, the colors are very sharp. Both the horizontal and the vertical viewing angles are excellent so if you want to have a couple of friends over and watch a movie on this laptop together, it’s not a problem at all.

Above the display there is a 1.3 mega pixel webcam which does a pretty good job at producing clear video images. Too bad that it only does that under good light conditions so don’t expect to use this webcam in a poorly lit environment. There is a number of 4 speakers integrated in this laptop which means you get a better sound quality when you play games. If you turn up the volume too high, you will hear some sound distortions so if you really plan on listening to loud music (or loud anything) it’s better you choose a good set of headphones or some external speakers. In the mean time, for usage at a medium level, these speakers sound way better than regular notebook speakers.  Apparently, tests have shown that this laptop can make a pretty powerful gaming unit. You can use it to play games like Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer, Counter Strike, Star Wars: Battlefront II or Half Life 2. Normally, you would expect a big gaming laptop with powerful components to produce a significant amount of head and therefore to have some ventilation problems. We are happy to inform you that this is not the case with the Sager NP9260.

You have 4 large diameter cooling fans that do a very good job at keeping this laptop under normal temperatures. At times, you may hear the coolers doing their job but the noise is not at all disturbing and they go off after a few minutes. The keyboard is at least nice. It has a dedicated numerical pad if you are even in need of working with spreadsheets. You have configurable game keys and other buttons that launch the default internet browser and e-mail. It’s very pleasant to type on the keys and they offer positive feedback. The touchpad is great and so are the left and right mouse buttons which are made of aluminum. It’s a large touchpad with a vertical scroll bar market on the right side. For gaming purposes, an external mouse is recommended because it may become difficult to use the keyboard and the touchpad simultaneously while playing a game.

Just like most big gaming laptops, this Sager has a nice selection of ports and features that really can increase the functionality of your laptop. You have 4 USB ports, one modem port, one Ethernet port, one VGA port, one DVI port, a Mini FireWire, an S-Video out, an Express Card slot, a 7-in-1 card reader, one security lock slot and a CATV antenna jack just in case you order a TV tuner.  There is also a S/PDIF out and the regular headphones and microphone jacks. If you set the screen brightness at a medium level and surf the internet, you will not get more than 1 hours and 5 minutes of battery life.

This is quite expected for big laptops with powerful components. If it weren’t for that spicy price tag, I’d already be out there getting one of these laptops for myself. The power inside this unit is excellent and the amazing part is that this laptop is cool in any way possible. The design is also nice, even if it’s nothing compared to an Alienware machine or a Dell XPS. The 17 inch display is gorgeous and it makes everything pleasant to watch, from game play to music videos and movies. The built in speakers will probably satisfy most users so most of you won’t need to get external speakers (unless you are extremely picky and want to break some windows with the music volume).

This laptop will come with Windows XP professional operating system and the good news is that you also have a number of CDs (including one with the operating system) with drivers and utilities plus user’s manuals for both Windows XP and Windows Vista. A set of external volume buttons would have been nice for a gaming laptop but everyone makes mistakes. That’s most certainly not a good reason for you not to buy this laptop.

Sager Notebook Reviews

To tell the truth, Sager is one laptop manufacturer who we haven’t stumbled upon very much while doing our every day homework. To our surprise, Sager notebook reviews turned out some very good units which are also quite expensive. While reading Sager notebook reviews we came across the 5760 which is a powerful notebook with the powerful price tag of $2982 for the unit reviewed.

This expensive unit is powered by a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo T2500 processor combined with 2 GB of RAM which runs a Windows XP operating system. The 2 GB of RAM can be upgraded to a maximum 4. The 100 GB hard drive may not provide enough storage room for users that work with lots of files but there is always the option of getting an external hard drive that can provide extra storage space. The graphics card is the nVidia GeForce Go 7900 with 256 MB of video memory. This 17 inch laptop makes a very nice desktop replacement. From the first moment you lay your hands on it, you can tell this notebook is durable. There is some flex in the palm rest area which, in my opinion, should not appear on an almost $3000 notebook. The 17 inch screen has a 1680 x 1050 resolution which makes the images look clear and beautiful. The disadvantage with this glossy screen (and with all glossy displays in general) is that you have to clean them all the time because dust particles become very visible.

Above the beautiful display you have a 1.3 megapixel webcam which is ideal for video calls on Skype as it produce clear images in real time. The speakers on this notebook are ok and the sound quality is decent. We do recommend external speakers if you want to listen to music a bit louder or enjoy a good movie with a couple of friends. The sound of the external speakers can never be compared with the on board sound of a notebook. Due to the good graphics card, you can play some really nice games on this laptop and enjoy their full performance. You can use this notebook to play games like F.E.A.R. and really enjoy the nice graphic details. Contrary to what you may think and expect from such a big notebook, the Sager 5760 runs pretty quiet. The area underneath the palm rest can get a bit hot but it’s nothing to be alarmed about at all. In the winter time, it’s actually nice how the palm rest can heat up your hands if it’s cold inside your house of office.

The keyboard also has a numerical pad which comes in handy when you have to work with spreadsheets. The keys are nice and they offer positive feedback each time you type. The touchpad is nice and there is no annoying friction if you use it for a while. We always prefer an external mouse to a laptop touchpad. There is nothing more to say, at it is a regular touchpad like those found on many different laptop models. On the right edge of the touchpad there is a scrolling bar which comes in handy when you have to read web pages or large documents. Between the left and right mouse buttons there is third button with arrows on it. I’m guessing it has the same scrolling function like it does on certain Acer models. as for the ports and connections of this notebook we are dealing here with 4 USB ports, an Ethernet port, a Serial port, a DVI out port, a RJ 11 phone jack, an S/PDIF out jack, a 7 pin S-Video out jack, a 7-in-1 card reader, a TV antenna jack, an Express Card slot, a Mini-IEEE 1394 port and the regular headphones out and microphone in jacks. As you can see, this 17 inch desktop replacement provides enough ports and connections to make everyone happy.

Try to have your unit shipped with preinstalled operating system because it saves some time in looking to buy a licensed version of Windows and installing all the drivers for your laptop. When the operating system is already installed, it saves you the trouble of having to do it yourself. The disadvantage is that when you get a notebook with preinstalled operating system, it probably has a lot of useless software installed in there as well. This notebook however came with some nice software like Intel Wireless, Nero and Intervideo which could probably come in handy for most of you. Even if this is a brand that many people haven’t heard of, there is a lot of information available on the internet for different models of this laptop manufacturing company.

It’s great notebook if you can afford it but the fact that it’s a 17 inch laptop makes it pretty heavy to be carried so this is why it’s meant to be used a desktop replacement. I don’t know about you, but I find it uncomfortable to carry 9 lbs with me around all day long. Since it’s a notebook which is good for gaming, it means it’s good for pretty much everything else. The processor combined with the 2 GB of RAM will provide enough speed and power for multitasking. The horizontal viewing angles of the display are satisfying so now would be a good time to gather your friends around this Sager notebook and enjoy a good movie. Even if it’s quite big, it manages to stay quiet and cool even after long hours of usage. User reviews give positive feedback as far as customer service goes.

One negative aspect that may determine you not to buy this laptop is the price tag. Not everyone can afford a $2000 laptop. In order to squeeze in that numerical pad, the manufacturers had to scarify some of the keys. In conclusion, if you want to use the PAGE DOWN, PAGE UP, END and HOME keys, you have to use the FUNCTION key plus one of the 4 arrow keys. It’s something you can get used to after a while.
