Remember the project received by the students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology?
They had to build a device that converts mechanical power into efficient electrical power, during a course called Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering Design, and so they came up with an exercise bicycle that uses “pedaling power” to charge a notebook.
Well, in April, the Intel Corporation launched a contest including the European universities that had to design a smart device capable of powering notebooks by using renewable, sustainable energy sources.
The contest has ended and Intel awarded the winners of the Intel University Competition On Renewable Energy (CORE).
Nir Tessler, professor at the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Eszter Morvay from the international IT analyst house IDC, and Ofri Wechsler from Intel were the jury and they had to review the projects coming from the universities in Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Italy and Spain.
And the winners are:
From Polytechnic of Madrid students came up with a pedal machine powered by human energy, so the pedaling produces energy and it’s turned into the electricity necessary to power the notebook by a power electronics converter.
Their innovative solution is easy to implement and uses quality electronic components, so the team is rewarded with €10,000 funding for supporting the scientific researches.
Students at the Polytechnic of Milan and Delft’s University of Technology from Netherlands are also rewarded.
The students from Italy demonstrated that they can use hydrogen fuel cell to power a notebook, an ingenious method because the hydrogen is a renewable and sustainable source of energy.
In Netherlands, the students invented a rocking-motion pedal mechanism, and both the Italy team and Netherlands’ are receiving a top-of-the-line laptop.

Korea had the pleasure to welcome a new innovative product destined for notebooks and other mobile devices.

The Shehwa Magic Screen is a personal information protection screen that has a unique characteristic: if you attach the thin film to your notebook or PDA LCD screen, your privacy will be protected because it prevents the screen from being seen.
The Shehwa company that produced the “device” said it supports 79% of transmission rate and less than 6% of reflection rate, giving the minimum stress to your eyes and in the same time enhancing the readability.
How it is working:
Magic Screen functioning is based on an angle-control method to work as a fine blind, so the person sitting in front of the monitor the image is very clear, but if others try to spy your work and look from a 30 degrees angle the only thing that they’ll see will be a blank or black screen.
The company says that the protective screen can be found at a very reasonable price.
