The next-generation of laptops from Nec will come with built-in hardware security against illegal access to the HDD, and the models included in the series are Versa M370, Versa P570 and Versa S970.
The advanced security system consists of the Trusted Platform Module security chip plus the corresponding encrypting disk drive and client management software.
With this new combination of high-end security technologies, large organizations’ laptops will have their stored data protected even in case of steal or lost.
Olivier Chevance, the Client Products Marketing Manager at NEC declared:
"With so many high-profile data breaches making headlines, securing sensitive information at the source - the laptop itself - is fast becoming a top priority for most organizations. That's why NEC Computers is providing its customers with the most advanced security and management available today within its Versa line of laptops."
In other words, the stored data is kept secure on a Technology Momentus FDE.2 full disk encryption hard drive based on DriveTrust technology, controlled via Wave's EMBASSY software.
The DriveTrust security platform uses automatic data protection methods permitting users to add applications for enhanced security, or even authentication hardware, such as biometrics and smart cards.
Referring at the Momentus 5400 FDE.2 2.5-inch hard disk that features AES encryption sais that "Theft of intellectual property, customer information and other precious content stored on laptops can cost organizations dearly in legal remedies, customer retention and reputation management. Seagate's Momentus 5400 FDE.2 hard drive with the Wave Systems management software enables NEC to deliver notebooks with the strongest, easiest to deploy security available so NEC customers can steer clear of these costly setbacks."

Science fiction has just collided head-on with science fact as NEC and Takara have joined forces to create the world’s first ever TYPE-01 super-powered Duke Nukem notebook.
Some of you may not remember Duke Nukem. These days, fads come and go so quickly, it is hard to keep up with, I know. For those who don’t know, Duke Nukem was a game that sold many units back in the early nineties about a character, Duke Nukem, who fought against a post-apocalyptic future. I believe that latter versions were a little darker and more violent, and I’m not certain what they did with the franchise recently.
Duke Nukem is not as famous a video game character as say, Mario, but he left his mark. As you can see, the NEC/Takara have preserved the Duke Nukem image with this limited edition notebook whose stickers, wallpaper, and keyboard setup look like something plucked right out of a Duke Nukem game.
Of course, there is more to a product than just fancy packaging. This is really a LaVie G type L laptop with a 15.4 WXGA display. It sports a 1.6GHz AMD Mobile Sempron 3200+ processor (Turion 64 X2 TL-50), 1 GB of DDR2 Ram, and 80-100GB hard drive. This thing is prepared for Wireless connectivity with 802.11 a/b/g, and it also has a DVD burner. As you can see, it also has an “emergency button” which shuts down the machine in case of intruders. (Maybe. It could just be there for show, like most of the facade.)
If this is something you need, or at least something you want, then you might have to play a different game to get a hold it. As it is, NEC plays to only make 300 of these TYPE-NO1, at a price between $1,231 or $1,476, depending on the amount of memory you want. Good luck getting your hands on this one, Duke Nukem fans!
