Review: HP Pavilion dv2000t

HP Pavilion dv2000t LaptopsWe thought previous HP Pavilions were pretty stylish, but the new design of the HP Pavilion dv2000t is even more appealing and makes the major competition look stale by comparison. Add to that a complete feature set and an attractive price ($1,149 after $100 mail-in rebate and $50 instant savings), and it's easy to understand the line's growing popularity.

At just 5.3-pounds, the dv2000t manages to pack an Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.8-GHz) processor, 1GB of RAM, 100GB HDD, Intel GMA 950 (128MB) graphics, and a 14.1-inch display.

Slick is the best way to describe the 5.3-pound HP Pavilion dv2000t's look. The high-gloss, piano-black exterior, with its subtle pinstriped wave pattern, is appealing to the eye and touch. At only one inch thick, this notebook is easy to carry. Open the latchless lid and you'll find a black keyboard offset by a glossy silver surround.

The one place where HP took the shininess motif too far is on the touchpad: Unlike with matte-finish surfaces, the gloss on the touchpad can make precise cursor control difficult. We found ourselves dragging and lifting and dragging again to get the cursor where we wanted it.

HP nc8430 with Core 2 Duo

HP nc8430 LaptopsThe nc8430 is HP's business class high-powered 15.4" notebook, often popular for its solid build, gaming capability, and business class support through HP. HP nc8430 starts at a base price of $1,449 with a three year standard warranty, but you can purchase the notebook as one of several pre-configured models or make a custom-to-order.

I ordered my laptop with the following specifications for $2410 as configured:

* Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 (2.16 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 4 MB L2 Cache)
* Windows XP Pro
* 2048MB (2GB) 667MHz DDR2 (1GB factory installed, 1GB customer installed)
* 100GB Hard Drive @ 7200 RPM
* 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
* 56Kbps Modem & 10/100/1000 NIC
* 8 Cell Primary Battery
* Dual Pointer Devices
* Intel 802.11a/b/g & Bluetooth
* Embedded TPM 1.2 & Fingerprint Reader
* 3/3/0 Year Onsite Warranty in US
* HP Advanced Docking Station

Overall, HP nc8430 is a very fine machine that has done much to impress both myself and my co-workers. While it does have its minor flaws, the notebook itself is build business-class touch. It delivers top notch gaming and processing performance while still maintaining a sleek and small profile for a 15.4" notebook. Most of the ports are positioned very well on the notebook, and its functionality is further enhanced with the Basic Docking Station. However, with power there comes great responsibility -- don't put this notebook on your lap and play a couple of high powered games.

For general purpose activities the notebook is fine no matter where it sits, so feel free to check your email, play solitaire, and surf the net from your living room couch. And for the amount of power in this notebook, the battery life is also very respectable and can be further enhanced through the secondary battery options provided by HP.

Review: HP Compaq nc2400

HP Compaq NC2400 LaptopsThe HP Compaq nc2400 is definitely the best business focussed ultra-portable notebook that I’ve seen. Even for an individual buyer, this thin and light laptop has a great deal to offer. The specification is good, the warranty is impressive and the ergonomics are first rate.

It seems churlish to complain about three hours of battery life on a notebook this small, but Sony has raised the bar so high in this area that every other manufacturer is playing catch up. But when you factor price into the equation, you can forgive the HP Compaq nc2400 for its modest battery life.

In fact you could happily specify an extended battery with this machine and still end up with a superb notebook at a great price.

Review: HP Compaq nx9420

HP Compaq NX9420 LaptopsThe HP Compaq nx9420 is the lower end of HP's 17 inch business notebooks (whereas the nw9440 is the higher end) and could be classified as a desktop replacement or a mobile workstation.

In Canada there are 4 pre-configured models (now 8 with the addition of Core 2 Duo) ranging from the T2300 to the T2500 (and T5600 to T7400) as the choice for processors.

This model is the second to the most expensive configuration (EV268AA) for the Core Duo processor.

After using the nx9420 for quite some time, I really enjoy the overall quality of this notebook. Everything about the notebook is solid in my opinion and it is a very good alternative to big, heavy 17 inch powerhouse notebooks. This unit is priced nicely and would be recommended to anyone looking for a light notebook with a large 17 inch screen.
