What is a net book? When first launched, the net book range had a different name, subnotebook. Basically a net book is a light weight notebook (with smaller dimensions), solid state drive, operating system (Windows), hard drive, and good connectivity, all for a smaller price tag than the notebook. One of the biggest advantages is the portability. The main disadvantage is the lack of high performances. As everyone knows by now, the first manufacturer that provided (and still provides) excellent quality net books (subnotebook) is Asus. Asus provides a full line of subnotebooks named Eee, which is an abbreviation of three Es: easy to learn, easy to work, easy to play.

One of the most appreciated (by customers) series of the Eee is the 1000 series. The 1000 series was launched at A media event in June 2008. Although this series provided for its subnotebooks a 10 inches screen, the Asus Eee PC 1101 HA includes an 11.6 inches screen. The Eee PC 1101 HA sports a seashell design, launched by Asus at CeBIT 2009. It is expected that Asus will include in its future Eee models Windows 7, WiMax, multi touch track pad, convertible touch screen, GPS and TV Tuner. However, before all this great features will be included in the thinniest subnotebook case, we should still pay attention to the 1000 series flagship, the Eee PC 1101 HA. What is seashell design? The Asus seashell series offers curvier lines on a slimmer profile with an excellent visual effect (the old Eee PC had a more angular design inspiring old). The Taiwanese manufacturer brought solid construction into a modern fluid design.

The latest addition to the Eee PC family is the biggest, boasting an 11.6 inches. However, a net book is still a subnotebook, which means you are not going to get the ultimate computer experience. In the design department (beside the excellent seashell case borrowed from 1008 HA), the Eee PC 1101 HA sports a plastic glossy black lid. Sure it looks nice, but it is a fingerprint magnet, it will add a lot of scratches to the seashell design, and it might just slip through your fingers. Drawbacks are the exposed (uncovered) ports (the Eee PC 1008 HA had no such drawback). The build quality is exceptional for this range. You get no flex or weird noises; the Eee PC 1101 HA feels solid enough to stand even one or two knocks. However when you carry the Eee PC 1101 HA you should take along a good protective case (no slim and fit sleeves if you want to protect your purchase). If you are familiar with the Eee PC 1008 HA keyboard, then you will find the greatest resemblance between the 1008 HA and the new 1101 HA. However, this is a great feature, because the keyboard is similar to the one used on Apple MacBooks or even Sony Vaio notebooks.

Therefore, is needless to say that Asus provided for the Eee PC 1101 HA the best quality keyboard in a net book. The keys are bigger than the ones found on smaller Eee PC models, making them easier to use. The keys also provide good feedback and lack flex when pressed. You get a full size return key, full size backspace key, and normal layout with good centering. Just under the Eee PC 1101 HA keyboard, you can find an old schooled track pad. It lacks modern features like multi touch functions; it even lacks the useful scroll feature. At least it looks good. If you don't mind this lack of funtions to your track pad, or maybe you use an old notebook, then you shouldn't find this a drawback. Even if the Eee PC 1101 HA is a net book, it still sports an excellent display. It is an 11.6 inches GNU Linux Display LED backlight screen, with a 1366 x 769 pixels (WXGA) with color shine. The 1101 HA display offers vibrant colors, and good detail rendition. Even so, because of the glossy finish, the display will be almost impossible to look at in broad daylight. Inside, Asus equipped the Eee PC 1101 HA an Intel GMA 500 graphic chipset.

Therefore, you will not be able to play any kind of games. This graphic chipset supports, at least, acceleration of 1080 p VC 1, AVC HD, and MPEG 2 video clips. Eee PC 1101 HA is shipped with an Intel Atom Z520 with 1.33 GHz (also found on other net book, like Dell Mini 10 and 12). This is a small processor. The better choice would have been the Intel Atom Z520 with 1.6 GHz.

The 1101 HA comes with only 1 GB DDR 2 SO - DIMM. However, you get a massive storage space, 160 GB hybrid storage HDD 4.200 rotations per minute and up to 10 GB Eee Storage. The connectivity is ensured by the buit in Bluetooth version 2.1, Wi-Fi with 802.11 b/g/n profile, three USB 2.0 ports, and LAN RJ 45. The Eee PC 1101 HA also features a VGA port, headphone in audio jack, microphone in jack, card reader (MMC, SD, SDHC), 1.3 megapixel web camera. An unexpected feature is the great SRS Premium Sound 5.1 surround audio. You get all these features, in a small device. The Eee PC 1101 HA has a height of 34 mm; wide of 281 mm, deep of 195 mm, the 1101 HA net book weights about 1.350 kg. In this case, Asus included a six cell 48 Watt hour Lithium Ion battery (4400 mAh). Under heavy use the battery life should go up to three hours and ten minutes, while in the light use test the battery should last 6 hours and 35 minutes. However, if you are a fan of TV series or movies, you should know the Eee PC 1101 HA will offer up to eight hours, continuously video playback.

Asus packs in the Eee PC 1101 HA some good features (not new features), offering an attractive product. However, the only unattractive feature in the 1101 HA. Is the price tag of €420 with VAT included. The Eee PC 1101 HA is a good choice only if you are looking for a high resolution display. Otherwise you might just find normal features and performance for a high price list.

From the launch of the first netbook, Asus Eee PC 701, Dell started to build a good competitor. However, Dell did not anticipate that Asus was preparing its own upgrades to Eee PC 701. The Dell Mini 9 netbook was released in a few weeks after the Asus Eee PC 901. Unfortunately, it lacked success at first, but became a disappointment, once the Eee PC 1000 H and the Eee PC S101 arrived on the market. However, this is not a bad netbook at all. It lacked marketing and a better positioning in Dell's portfolio.

This Mini 9 provides good features (comparable with an older laptop). Other huge advantages over the Asus models, is that even do it is late it brings small size, good readable display, huge hard drive, great performances when used with office applications, Wi-Fi and many others, while Asus had to continuously improve its line to deliver such features. At a glance you might even say that the entire wait paid off. The only main disadvantage brought by Dell Mini is the rather small keyboard. The netbook has a height of 1 to 1.22 inches and weighs about 1.035 kg (or about 2.28 lbs). These dimensions make it very small. Even so the Mini 9 sports a glossy 8.9 inches LCD display (with a diagonal of 22.6 cm) with a resolution of 1024 x 600 (133 dpi). Above the display you will also find a web camera, while below the screen Mini 9 includes two small speakers. Even if this display might seem too small, it is extremely readable and it will not create any problems when browsing the web, or editing Office documents. You might lose your patience if you work with spreadsheets documents. The Mini 9 is equipped with the Diamondville Intel Atom 1.6 GHz N270 processer with 533 MHz FSB and 512 kb cache.

This is an average feature for netbooks, since the Atom was created for small notebooks. Visually this netbook is attractive. It design was copied even by the new Booklet from Nokia. The lid is not quite glossy but it is certainly not matte like the back side. The design overall is quite resisting and is still attractive even now, one year later since the release on the market. A great feature is that the hardware design includes passive cooling making the Mini 9 fan-less and extremely quiet (you probably not even hear it). Also the exterior design helped Dell including a pretty consistent number of ports. On the left you can find the power input and about three USB 2.0 ports (over the average in this range of only two USB 2.0 ports). Also on the left, you can find the memory card reader (a feature that you will need in order to save some readable memory). This memory card reader is compatible with the following memory cards, SD memory card, SDHC memory card, MMC memory card, and also both Memory Stick Card and Memory Stick Pro card. At a second closer look you will discover the Ethernet port (10 / 100), the VGA out port (in order to connect the Mini 9 to an external display). In the connectivity department you will get beside the Ethernet port, the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g support, Bluetooth 2.0. Mini 9 also has integrated HSDPA (with up to 7.2 MB per second).

The SIM card slot can be found under the battery. This location should not be a main disadvantage, because it was placed there in order to keep it safe. The overall look of the keyboard might let you think this netbook is an Inspiron 1525 with smaller dimensions. The keys feel solid, no flex when pressing them, offering a good feedback. The touch pad is precise and it is center placed under the keyboard. By doing so, Dell improved the usability of this model (when writing you will not accidentally touch the touch pad making your display scroll up or down). Dell also included the special keys like Tab, Caps Lock and others in a smaller design than the actual keyboard keys. Therefore, you should have everything in hand when writing or editing important Office documents.

In the memory department, Mini 9 is equipped with 1024 MB DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHz (upgradable to 2048 MB DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHz); with a 16 GB SSD hard drive. Dell used on the Mini 9 the Intel GMA 950 chipset and an integrated Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset. The only operating system capable of running on the Mini 9 netbook is Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. The Mini 9 has a four cell battery with 32 Watt per hour. This battery is sufficient in normal activities, like emailing, editing, internet browsing, or listening to music. It should last about three hours and 21 minutes.

Even if the Dell Mini 9 netbook was discontinued on May 29, 2009, you can still find it on stock at resellers with an extremely small price list. Therefore if you liked the Asus Eee PC 901, but you are looking for a change of scenery (or manufacturer) without draining you money supply you should look for Mini 9 bargains. If money is no concern for you in this uncertainly time, then you should also take a closer look to the pricy Dell Inspiron Mini 10 and Inspiron Mini 10v 9with asking price of a full feature laptop).
