As there is a high demand of thinner and lightweight notebooks with more and more features and the latest technologies, all leading companies in the industry are working hard on feeling these requirements.
Apple was the first to develop the thinnest notebook of 0.16 inches thickness, and weighting just 3 pounds, presented at CES 2008, under the name MacBook Air, model running on Leopard OS.

Its glossy display measures 13.3 inches and is a LED backlit wide type with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution, while the keyboard has full size with backlit key illumination for optimal visibility, the same technology used for the built-in iSight camera for video conferencing.
Other special feature is the large trackpad with multi-touch input support that allows users to pinch, rotate and swipe.

On the inside MacBook Air has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor clocked at 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz, 2GB memory, a 1.8-inch HDD with 80GB storage, and support for AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity technologies to deliver up to five times the performance and twice the range of the previous Wi-Fi module.

Steve Jobs said that Apple accomplished the project of creating the world’s thinnest notebook “without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display. When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is.”

The thinnest notebook operates for up to five hours until a new battery charge, and comes with the Migration Assistant software that allows wireless transfer from old Macs onto MacBook Air.
To help the environment, Apple’s MacBook Air was built using safe materials such as aluminum enclosure, mercury-free substances and arsenic-free glass for the LCD, brominated flame retardant-free material for the majority of circuit boards and PVC-free internal cables.
In less than two weeks, the thinnest notebook will be available on the market at a starting price of $1,800.

There appeared some rumors related to a new Apple sub-notebook that will be released at Macworld in January 2008 but the company has not confirmed this yet.
From what we’ve heard, the new sub-notebook is 50 times thinner than the MacBook Pro, will employ NAND flash memory instead of the hard disk drive, and will be available at a retail price of $1,500.
Some rumors say that the display will measure 12 inches but others describe a 13.3-inch display, either way it will be a tiny last-gen notebook.

Apple Inc. made an announcement about transitioning its entire line of LCD displays over to all mercury-based fluorescent LCD panels.
This week
Apple seems to be making progress on its transition to LED-backlit LCD panels. Reports confirmed that AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics all have
LED-backlight LCD panels that are under review by Apple. Au Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics are further down the line with Apple, having 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch panels already certified by Apple.
Apple's 15.4-inch MacBook Pro line of laptops are already using the new panels, and the new 13.3-inch certifications indicate that Apple will be transitioning its MacBook line soon. Coretronic and Kenmos Technology, suppliers of LED-backlights, have been sourced by Apple, with Kenmos being preferred for its integration with Stanley Electric's LED V-cut light-guide panel technology. Because of this, Chi Mei Optoelectronics has decided to use back panels from Kenmos.

Apple just upped the ante of its
MacBook Pro line with the release of upgraded models that feature the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors.
With this boost Apple promises a 39% speed bump from the previous models (including the one I just got a week ago, sob) and 7x faster than the G4 PowerBooks.
The 15"
Mac Book Pro now comes in 2.16GHz and 2.33GHz models priced at $1,999 and $2499 respectively and a 17" model aptly priced at $2799. The US Apple stores says the 15" models will ship in 2-4 days while the 17" a little later at 7-10 business days.
The 15-inch models will now support, much desired pro features including dual layer DVD writers and FireWire 800 ports.
These new laptops are definitely hot and fast and come with everything except seat-belts.
