When it comes to Apple laptops, there is so much to talk about even if they don't have so many models available like Dell or HP. In fact, it,s safer to compare Apple to Alienware as far as the number of laptop models goes. One of the most famous Apple laptops is the MacBook Air. To be very honest, after seeing lots of cool laptop with awesome performance, Apple laptops do not impress me as they did the first time I saw them on the market. The design is really unique and it,s difficult to compare it to any other thin and light wannabe laptop on the market.

The processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo P7500 with a speed of 1.6 GHz. It has 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, another 80 GB of available disk space and the Intel GMA X3100 graphics card with 144 MB of shared video memory. Like I said before, the design is amazing and this is one laptop with looks to brag about. It is incredibly thin compared to other laptops on the market. One of the nice touches that Apple added to this laptop is the magnetic latch cover that keeps all the ports and connections hidden. Even if it,s really thin, this laptop is still very solid. You can feel the durability in the keyboard structure and the palm rest. The 13.3 inch display may be glossy, but the colors are sharp and clear and the display,s brightness is intense. Horizontal viewing angles are extremely satisfying so you can enjoy a good movie if you have a couple of friends gathered beside you. The keyboard of this laptop has redefined the cool laptop keyboard concept. It will be difficult to get used at first with the spacing between the keys but after you do, it will be a pleasure to chat using this lovely keyboard.


The touchpad has special qualities that are not found in just any laptop. The regular Windows users will be the first to notice that this particular touchpad is way larger than what they are used to. The touchpad can support multi touch gestures which means you get to play around with objects and use different finger controls to zoom in and out of photos and perform different other operations. One review that we read said that under Windows there is problem with the touchpad freezing and blue screens. There must be something wrong with the drivers. The performance levels are ok considering that the laptop will boot in approximately 56 minutes. Multi tasking seems to be quite slow as programs and application take longer than usual to launch. The keyboard back light seems to have problems running under Windows Vista. The number of ports and connections is way too low even for a 13.3 inch laptop. There is only one USB port, a mini DVI-Out and a headphone jack. So, the possibilities are very limited since there is not even an Ethernet port.



Aside from many disappointments, heat is another problem of the Apple MacBook Air. This unit runs a little hot under considerable pressure. The processor is located under the top left corner of the keyboard and that is one of the hottest spots. Playing games is one of the biggest threats for the "coolness" of this laptop. The battery life is ok. if you turn on the wireless function, turn down the screen brightness level to a 25% and surf the internet you will get about 4 hours and 20 minutes of battery life. If you disable the wireless card, you are bound to get more than 5 hours of laptop usage. The integrated battery is a definite minus for the MacBook Air because it cannot be remover or replaced. This means that if the battery dies out on you when you are away from a power outlet there is absolutely no chance you can use it until you charge it.


The idea of being the owner of an Apple laptop is ok and it makes you feel like you belong to a certain special category of laptop users. To be really honest, aside from the super cool thin and light design there is nothing too special or appealing about this laptop. Nothing can really compensate with the small number of ports and connections. One USB port is exaggerated. Even netbook which are super small have at least 2 USB port. I mean, if you want to attach an external mouse you have no remaining USB ports available for anything else. If you need to copy something to a memory stick you have to keep removing the laptop from the unit. This really could have been avoided with at least one more such port without affecting the thinness of the MacBook Air. The big advantage is that you can carry it around wherever you go.


We checked the Apple website and there are 2 other configurations for the MacBook Air. There is the 1.86 GHz MacBook Air with Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, another 120 GB of hard drive space and the nVidia GeForce 9400M graphics card which is priced at $1500. The other option is the 2.13 GHz which also has an Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 GB of memory. The difference actually consists in the operating speed of the processor and you have 8 extra GB of disk space. The total price of the second unit is $1800. It is still a bit too pricy if you ask me but this is a matter of taste and I strongly believe that you are paying the brand more than you are paying for the actual unit. Overall, Apple laptops are cool. Most of the money you give goes to the design which is unique on the market.


Other than that, we don,t see super spectacular features that make this laptop worth $1800. I suppose this is a matter of taste. Personally, I don,t recommend the Apple MacBook Air unless you are looking for a second laptop which is really light and easy to carry around all day, a laptop from a powerful name is entertainment gadgets.

Since we wrote in one of our past articles that one of most appreciated refurbished laptops is an Apple, I thought we could talk a bit more about one of the world's most famous laptop manufacturers. Used Apple laptops are sold worldwide but first I have to make sure you understand the difference between the terms "used" and "refurbished". A refurbished laptop has been returned by the user and may have never actually been used. Some people return them for apparently no reason and there have cases where a laptop was shipped, the buyer opened the box and returned the laptop without even turning it on. Don't ask us why but you can be sure there was nothing wrong with the machine (maybe a guilty conscience for spending so much money?).

You can buy a used Apple laptop MacBook for as low as $400 on e-Bay. Personally, I don't recommend used laptop bought on e-Bay. I think that when you adventure yourself to buy a laptop that has no warranty and therefore no guarantee that it will still turn on the second day after you buy it, you should at least have the privilege to try it out. Try looking for someone who is selling a used laptop in your city or somewhere nearby. This was, the two of you can meet and you can look at the laptop, see if it has any damage like scratches or cracked chassis problems. You can also perform some simple tests. Look at the screws on the bottom to see if they have even been removed. If they have, you may want to remove them again yourself and see if there was any messing around with the interior parts. Maybe the heat sink has reordered to the motherboard and other problems like that. Turn the laptop on; see if the display has any dead pixels or if the hinge can keep the screen steady in place.



These are some general tips for you if you are considering buying a used laptop, Apple or any other kind. With used laptops, there is no guarantee the unit is not damaged so this is why we recommend you don't buy one online. For $700 we found Apple MacBook 13 in "excellent condition". There are some photos with this particular unit which are pretty reassuring. There are no visible damages with this laptop. The seller will even put it in the original box it came with and also include every other accessory of this laptop. This MacBook has a beautiful black color but I think it's the thin and light feature that makes this laptop so attractive. Just by thinking about every other product that Apple has launched so far, you know we are talking about a high quality gadget here. This unit has the 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB of available disk space. The 13.3 inch display is a beauty with Macs and even if the screen is glossy, it's a rare case where this does not bother us. The resolution of the display is 1280 x 800 pixels.



This laptop is easy to carry around with you and it does not occupy a lot of space. You can enjoy some good movies on it. Above the display you will even find a webcam, one of Apple's finest. There is also an integrated Bluetooth device. The operating system is a Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and even if you are used to working mostly with Windows Vista, this operating system has a very user friendly interface with color and toolbar that pop up with some simple clicks. We are sure you won't have any problems getting used to it. The seller encourages you to e-mail him in case you have any additional questions. Just be careful what you ask, you may not always get a straight answer. Questions like "have you ever had any hardware problem with this laptop" may not be answered honestly but if you ask general questions like "can I use it to run this application" than the answer may reflect the truth. This is information that you can look up the internet and you can easily verify if the answer to that second question was a fake. The seller also specifies that he does not offer any refund and there is no return policy. Should we thank him for his honesty?

When MacBook Pro 17” was first released it came on the market with sealed batteries system; now this feature belongs to the smaller versions - new MacBook Pro 13” and 15”. And according to the tests performed by Walter Mossberg the battery seems to be good enough to count it among the best features of the recently released MacBook Pro – 15” and 13”.

Here is a summary of these tests.

It is a fact that most of the customers to own a laptop never use the possibility that removable batteries offers you, meaning to buy a fresh spare one to replace the old between charges. According to NPD estimations, barely a 5% of the users buy a spare battery, so as a result a new trend emerged in the industry: more electronic producers started to build their devices with the rechargeable batteries sealed inside. The company which adopted this trend is Apple, that it is known to adhere each time to new trends, maybe at a faster pace than any other companies in profile. As such, when the new MacBook Pros 15” and 13” were released they came with higher capacity, sealed-in batteries. Including the batteries in the device allows the producer to create bigger ones, with higher capacity (this one has grown between 33% and 46%) and at the same time they don’t present the risk of hefting the device. On top of it Apple declares that the software technology available on the device confers the battery a 5 years life-time.

The two laptops revealed the fact that the batteries meet Apple’s claims that they last seven hours between charges, almost a full time work without any plugging. In this case purchasing spare batteries seems futile. There are however some aspects left to measure; for one is the Apple’s claim that they last up to 1,000 charging times, meaning the 5 years life time duration of such battery. Secondly, the guarantee terms are not very clearly specified, for instance if the battery doesn’t prove to hold an adequate charge, what then? Apple says that the company allows you to replace it at a price that normally costs the rechargeable one, but this is not to be verified yet. And another aspect that needs to be considered is the case of the users that need the device mostly on their long travels by the planes, and a replaceable battery seems to be a must. And this option for the new MacBook Pros is unavailable, unfortunately.

At turned-off power-saving features, with Wi-Fi network on, a maximum screen brightness and continuous music play, the test revealed that the MacBook Pros both didn’t use the energy-saving, and a less consumed power due to the use of integrated graphics chips. But either way, the results lead to the same conclusion: Apple managed to produce MacBook Pros’ sealed batteries of larger size and life as well, without extra-weight of the device and we just need to let the time pass and see if these batteries last indeed up to 5 years. But who knows what other new laptops will meanwhile emerge on the market?

Even if the new 17” MacBook Pro is cheaper than its last updated version released in March, it doesn’t mean that is less good. The recent testing show some improvements, though is not too much differentiated than its predecessor. We are already used with the top design of MacBooks, the silver bodied case, solid having an incredible weight of 6.6 pounds that makes it easy to be used on the go. We meet the same left location for the Fire Wire 800 port that includes also an Ethernet jack, three USB 2.0 ports, a MiniDisplay connector that enables attaching to an external display, microphone and headphone ports. There are also present an ExpressCard/34 slot, indicator lights to reveal the power of the battery left.

The right side of the case incorporates a security-lock and a slot-loading optical drive that unfortunately does not support Blu-ray discs. The locking system of the case is provided by a magnetic latch, and once you lift the upper lid, a 17.4” glossy screen appears with a 1,920x1,200 resolution that allows high-definition video viewing. The keyboard presents backlit keys and because of its wide disposed keys it makes it easy to handle while typing. The deck of the keyboard is proportionally sized offering a buttonless touch pad that enables you to press anywhere in order to activate a function. The same pattern is used on Apple iPhones that the touch feature allows you to zoom, rotate and slide images around.

The new Apple MacBook incorporates a processor of 2.8GHz that can be upgraded to 3.06GHz at a price of $300.00. through a Cinebench testing, that measures processor capability, the above mentioned processor scored an improvement with almost 1,000 points, in this way outscoring most of its competitors. The media encoding test is also performed with 1 minute faster than any other laptop in its class. The graphics disposal is providing two graphics processors able to be switched between: Nvidia GeForec 9400M and the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT. The 9400M chip reveals to be more special in that it performs better than an incorporated solution at the same time not taking too much space, meaning that even when the battery-saving mode is on, one can still get impressive graphics.

A 500GB Serial ATA hard drive is standard to this system spinning at 5,400 rpm and a 4GB of 1,066MHz DDR3 RAM; it is upgradeable to 128GB at a price of $200.00 and 256GB SSD for $650.00.

The battery life is also extended at 5 hrs and 16 min with the second graphics processor off, with 20 min longer than its previous model and hours longer than other desktop replacements. The OS for this MacBook Pro is Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard that includes iLife ’09 with its GarageBand, iDVD, iMOVIE, iPhoto and iWeb. Though the MacBook Pro new version lacks some performance in its processor, one can still claim that its high-resolution screen and its maneuverability make Apple MacBook Pro (17-Inch), the best for professional designers.
