Acer Notebooks

While doing some of your regular internet research, we have stumbled upon an Acer notebook we are not sure why we've never heard about. A quick look through the specs left us the impression that this notebook is actually a very good desktop replacement. Better yet, we'll let you be the judge of that after you read this review about the Acer Aspire 6920G.

I was not very attracted to the design because of two main aspects I hate in a notebook. First of all, I would give a big minus to that glossy black lid which not only looks like it's made of cheap plastic, it also attract fingerprints and if you scratch it, the scratches will be very visible. Second of all (but this is a matter of personal taste), I don't appreciate all those stickers on my notebook which have the name of the processor and other technical specification. However, this is a problem that can be avoided I assume by simply ordering your laptop directly from Acer's website rather than buying it from the store. Other than that, there is nothing particularly special about the design.  We like the Acer logo on the lid because it's illuminated and the keyboard is no longer centered and this gives the 6920G quite a unique look. The hinges are well built-in and they seem to keep the display steady in place. You have 4 USB ports, 1 Express Card slot and a 6-in-1 card reader, one VGA and one HDMI output, the Ethernet port, Kensington lock and your regular microphone and headphones jack.

The black concave keys are a pleasure to type on and they offer a good response. The touchpad is also great and you won't feel any unpleasant friction if you use it for a long time. You will notice 2 up and down arrows that indicate the scrolling area. Between the left and right mouse button, you will find the fingerprint reader which we think is more of a business-notebook accessory but it's ok for you as well just as long as you are the only one who is planning to use this notebook. The main thing that made us fall in love with this laptop is the beautiful media control center on the left side of the keyboard. There you have a whole set of touch sensitive button so you can control your multimedia options and our guess it you will be playing with them quite a lot when you first get your hands on this notebook. They are the Eiffel Tower of the Acer Aspire 6920G.

The unit reviewed has an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 processor with 4 GB of RAM but unfortunately it has the Intel X3100 integrated graphics which won't allow you to do much gaming. As for the file storage capacity, we believe that 250 GB should be more than enough even if this is your primary computer. The processor is also not the best or fastest one available on the market but it depends on what you are going to use this Acer notebook for. You should be able to run multiple mainstream applications pretty fast and if you have to surf on the internet, write a document and listen to some music, then you should have no trouble at all. Like we have mentioned before, the graphics card is not exactly the best option if you are into serious gaming and if you like to play games always beware of notebook that have integrated graphics.  The speakers of the Acer Aspire 6920G have a subwoofer-companion that helps increase the quality of the sound and even add a little bass. Now you can really enjoy a good horror movie and get a "scream" out of it, without having to attach external speakers (unless the room is very big of course).  Disable the subwoofer and that is the point where you will really begin to hate the speakers but we recommend you let the subwoofer turned on to get some high quality notebook sound.

We were surprised to see that this little monster provided us with 4 hours of battery life even with the wireless turned on and with a medium level of display brightness. We found the temperature of this notebook to be ok as well. There were no signs of exaggerated heat even after long periods of usage. The fan does not make much noise either and if you are in a room full of people then you can barely hear it at all. And here come the one thing I couldn't really believe my eyes. You can buy this laptop for a price as low as $900.  For such a small fee you can have this Acer Gemstone Blue notebook which is definitely something special than most models we have seen on the market today. We did not expect such innovation in an Acer model, especially nowadays when we thought we saw it all. This is a very good notebook especially if you are in need of a good computer and have a limited budget.

If you plan to use this notebook at home and none of your family members is a game-addict, than it's perfect to use as your main computer. The fact that this 16 inch laptop does not have a numerical keypad like most big-sized notebook do, did not bother us at all because we have the media control buttons which are so blue and good looking, they make up for other losses as well. Even if the viewing angles are quite poor and you won't be able to enjoy a movie if you invite a lot of friends over, you will still love the screen which has a paint finish and delivers clear and sharp images. Besides, you can always attach an external monitor and make some extra popcorn. This is one of the best balances between price and quality that we have seen so far in a notebook and to be honest, if we didn't know it was an Asus, we would have never guessed it. If we have to put this notebook under a certain category, we would go with multimedia, although it's pretty good for office work as well.
